Zen Home Decor
I could feel the calming effects of Zen home decor, while researching for this post. Decorating with a Zen style invites tranquility and peace into your home. Like Waldorf, Zen style can be very much a lifestyle, not just a home decor style. You could choose to create a Zen corner in your home to give you a serene space for prayer and meditation.
The Basics of Zen Style
Is that pun? Zen style could be described as basic. It is similar to Minimalism style. Zen is stylish simplicity, purity of lines, and harmonious. A Zen home is arranged to be both open and intimate. It has a peaceful, soothing atmosphere. No matter what your home decor style preferences are, your home is your oasis away from the stress and external world. That is even more so with a Zen styled home. The root of its purpose is to create an atmosphere of soothing peace.
Colors of Zen
The best way to describe the colors of Zen style would be monochrome, soft, earthy colors. Think white, ivory, grey, beige, pink beige, moleskin, khaki and natural shades of green.
Textures of Zen
You can really see the Asian influences of Zen in its textures of bamboo, wood, paper, stone and natural light fabrics of cotton, linen and wool. Flooring in a Zen home is likely refined wood, parquet, or possibly a wool carpet.
Lighting
Natural, soft lighting, indirect lighting is the best way to light a Zen room. Remove all florescent lights and probably most ceiling lights. Diffuse lights with paper lampshades and use candles for even more calming ambiance. Just make sure their scent is not strong.
Zen Style Furniture
Furniture for the Zen home is simple & natural with clean lines. Highly varnished wood furnishings with little or no detail best suit this style. Chairs and beds will be low and comfortable.
Accessories for the Zen Styled Home
I thought about leaving this section blank – that would almost say it all. Like Minimilasm style, Zen style decor is without clutter; accessories are keep to a simplistic minimum. A Zen home decor has little or no wall decor. An accent wall of stone or a monochromatic wood design, may be all the wall decor needed in one room. Green plants are used as accents in a Zen home; they clean the oxygen and encourage feelings of freshness and tranquility.
In the post about Goth style one element accessory was music. In Zen, scents are important – scents that calm. Make sure plants and candles do not have any overbearing scents. Scents should encourage calmness when it’s time to rest and energize when it’s time to be awake.
I don’t think a full on Zen styled home is for me, although it would make dusting and cleaning much easier. I would like to one day have a Zen corner for prayer and meditation. What do you think of Zen style? Comment below and let us know is it for you or not?
