Finding Balance in Asian Style
The Asian style is one of both elegance and balance. It’s sleek lines and minimalist accessories give you a feeling of peace and tranquility, which may be why you see it used in so many spas (not that I’ve been to that many). It is a simplistic style where less is more. The best Asian styled room will sooth and relax anyone who steps into it. Balanced and simple do not equal plain. The Asian decor style is rich and harmoniously connected to nature.
Influences
This style is comprised of Zen-like elements, inspirational features and is a fusion of several different elements from across the Asian region. Japanese, Chinese and even Indian themes influence the Asian style.
Style Basics
Asian style appeals to many eco-conscious decorators. Teak, wood, bamboo, polished stone, potted plants all bring nature into the Asian inspired living space. Look for furnishings and accessories that are sustainable and organic. These natural elements add to the ambiance of the decor. Each texture and element balances out the other. It is mesmerizing, fresh, contemporary and, dare I say it again, balanced.
Colors
The color choices are crucial. Starting with a color palette of warm earth-tones, then add rich color. If BOLD were a color you would find it in this style — cherry blossoms, deep reds, gorgeous purples, rich golds. Think red lacquer furniture against white walls with black accessories. Imagine orange pillows on white bedding on a wood bed.
Design Elements
Deciding on accessories for the Asian styled home takes precise thought. The accessories are balanced both in size and placement. Clutter is not acceptable. Keeping it simple and balanced means thinking through the placement of each item. While this style is simple, it does not have to be bare, just (again) balanced. Options to choose from are many, so choose only what you truly love.

An Asian inspired home will often have a water feature to bring in the sound of glowing water which adds to the harmony of the decor. Beautiful wind chimes add to that Oriental feel. Sound is not the only sense that can to the Asian style experience. Try some sandalwood scented candles to enhance the serene, comfort of this style.
Lighting
Sculptural lighting features and stylish Paper Lanterns accentuates the elegance of this oriental inspired style. Candles and natural lighting enhance the ambiance of this style.
Furniture
In an Asian inspired bedroom you may find a platform bed or even just a mattress on the floor. Ornately carved wood tables, chests and other furniture. Couches with perfectly placed and the balanced amount of throw pillows. Tables and sofas with sleek lines. Furniture for this style is simple functional, and elegant.

Excellent article. I have heard that regardless of our decor it is a good idea to include an Asian element somewhere. What do you think?
Good question. Expanding on your question I’d ask, What is really the most important part of defining your home decor style? Most of us would answer that making sure the people living there are comfortable. There are lots of shoulds and should nots by the experts. Consider your lifestyle, your family preferences and then decide for yourself what you should do in your space.
Thank you. Yours was a savvy and thoughtful answer.
