Does Kitsch Define Your Personal Style?
This post defining kitsch is part of a series about discovering different styles and which ones define your
personal style(s). Yes, I believe we can have more than one personal style. We have more than one mood, more than one room to decorate, more than one outfit, right? So of course we have more than one style. You probably have one primary personal style defined for your home and another for your wardrobe. Maybe kitsch is just your style or your sister’s personal style. Knowing the personal style of your close friends and family can make gift-giving so much easier. Telling them your personal style can help them out as well.
Do you love color, pizzazz, fun & funky? The hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil monkeys pictured above are cute and kitsch. It was also a rare kitsch item that was in my etsy shop and which recently sold (Yay!). When I found those little monkeys they were brown and boring. Some hot pink spray paint and they have a whole new kitsch life!
While I don’t think all out kitsch is my personal style, I do love to incorporate something fun or amusing into each room I decorate. I love a fun colorful outfit, too. So a little kitsch makes me smile. Be sure to click the link to my Pinterest board for lots of kitsch style that will make you smile.
I think the “official” definitions for kitsch are a hoot!
kitsch [( kich)]
Works of art and other objects (such as furniture) that are meant to look costly but actually are in poor taste. (source)
Note : Kitsch in literature and music is associated with sentimentalism as well as bad taste.
- tawdry, vulgarized, or pretentious art, literature, etc, usually with popular or sentimental appeal
- (as modifier): a kitsch plaster bust of Beethoven
Urban Dictionary: As an art movement, lifestyle, or literature and film genre, kitsch is pleasingly distasteful. It’s melodramatic, overdone, gaudy and tacky or sentimental and folksy. It’s so bad that it’s cool. Your cat might attack it, but it’s hot.
How often do you hear or use the word kitsch to describe something? Does it define your personal style or do you think a little kitsch goes a long way? Do you love it or not so much? Comment below…inquiring minds want to know!
