Industrial – Style Defined

Sleek Comfortable Industrial Style

I wish I had some pictures from my sister’s home before I write this post. Maybe she will read it send some pictures that I can add to it later. She has a wonderful decorating style with clean lines and industrial style influences.

Opposites Attract, Right?

When I think of the word “Industrial” I think cold and practical. It’s anything but cold. It’s a charming mix & match of opposites. This style is full of opposites that are very attractive together:

aged wood meets iron pipe
modern meets primitive
subtle meets dramatic
contemporary meets nostalgic
sleek meets comfort

Get Exposed

Leaving rivets, finishes, structural elements exposed is one of the cornerstones of industrial style. Exposed wood beams, brick and concrete add to its simple and functional feel. Open, airy floor-plans (think old warehouse or loft) make wonderful backdrops for this style. Doesn’t it remind you of mechanical ingenuity of the manufacturing era?

Lots of Hardware

An industrial style necessity is metal – pipes, galvanized finishes, exposed rivets, metal cages, industrial hardware, steel columns, brushed nickel, wrought iron, copper, rusted patina, hammered and weathered metal. Metal is one of the ways innovative recycling is incorporated into this style. Pipes used as table legs, closet organizers, and other utilitarian details.

Industrial Style Personality

This urban style is eco-friendly, energetic, and eclectic. Industrial style gives you an outlet for expressing your creativity by repurposing found objects. If this is your style you will find yourself craving vintage objects and you will want to craft many pieces of your own.

Colors

The industrial style color palette is mostly neutral tones with occasional color. Although the sleek, quality craftsmanship of this style can have hard lines to it, you will also find soft accents in the colors and accessories. Using graphics, painted bold symbols and abstract art is an easy way to add color and change the focus of the room.

Incorporating

If your style is vintage or farmhouse, it will be easy for you to incorporate some industrial style elements. Here are some simple ways to incorporate this style into your decor here and there:

If you don’t have concrete available – do a faux concrete look on your walls or floors.
Try building desk like the industrial style desk from Justagirlandherblog.com, found here.
Switch out your lighting and use Edison filament exposed bulbs
Add in some worn textures like a barn-wood coffee table
Add a mechanical detail – something with the mechanical workings exposed, like a pulley inspired light
Get a tripod floor lamp

Is industrial your style? Do you already have some industrial elements in your home? Please share in the comments below and help all my readers incorporate this modern vintage style into their homes.
