Hollywood Regency – Style Defined

Welcome to Hollywood Regency

What is black and white and GLAMOROUS all over?  The overstated, rich, luxe of the Hollywood Regency style is your answer and I’m wondering if it is your style as well.  While this style reminds me of an expensive, luxurious hotel, the name reminds me of that scene in the movie Pretty Woman, where they guy says “Welcome to Hollywood!  What’s your dream?”

The Starburst Mirror is a staple in Hollywood Regency styled décor.

This style is a dream.  A dream right from a classic movie set.  Think 1930s, old Hollywood, Rita Hayworth, Marilyn Monroe, and grand entrances.  This bold, rich style is so full of depth that it is hard to know where to start describing it.

Color Palate

Let’s start with something easy, like color.  Most Hollywood Regency designs start with a basic black and white.  Sometimes a lot of one or the other.  Then add in one or more deep, majestic colors – royal blue, bright red, emerald green, deep purple, brilliant yellow.  Don’t forget a huge helping of shimmering metallic gold or maybe silver.

The Standards

Hollywood Regency is a mix of  classic design elements.  It is eclectic yet still harmonious.  This style from the 1930s era is mix of luxurious styles including, neoclassical, art deco, Venetian and a bit of Chinese inspiration.  Furniture is usually small scale and grouped to encourage people to interact, socialize.  Accessories are unique, dramatic and over-sized.  Each piece beautifully balances the grandeur of the room and yet can stand alone as it’s own piece of art.

Lush & Luxurious Elements

What makes this style so rich & dramatic?  There is no shabby at all in this chic!  It’s grandeur incorporates so many design elements, if they are not perfectly balanced it can be overwhelming.  So overwhelming that you might have to take advantage of the fainting couch that is certain to be found somewhere in Hollywood Regency styled home.  The elements of this style include:

  • Glossy anywhere:  Lacquer furniture pieces, walls or ceilings with a high gloss sheen, bright glossy accessories
  • Rich fabrics:   Velvet, silks, brocades, tassels and trim
  • Sumptuous sparkle:  Crystal chandeliers, crystal accessories, tables made of glass
  • Mirrors everywhere:  Big, bold, beautiful and decadent mirrors, even walls covered with mirrors
  • Rich textures:  Fantastic wallpaper, sculpted carpet

I love the glitz, glam, deep colors and shiny, sparkle of this style.  It has the old world, royal feel and mixes well with clean modern lines.  Do you dream of a Hollywood Regency home?  Do you own any distinct pieces that are inspired by this style?  Leave a comment and let me know what you really think – is this your style or not?

Blessings,

Lauree

…keep dancing the dream

  1. Excellent article. It made me nostalgic with a strong desire to watch very old movies and enjoy the Hollywood Glam – on screen.
