Repeat This Style
You’ve probably said this about fashion – history repeats itself. It’s true in home decor, too. Mid-Century decor was born in the 1930s-1940s and continued through the late 60s to early 70s. It was considered cutting edge at the time. Now it’s being given a second chance.
The Basics of Mid-Century Style
This style is a simple, eclectic mix of styles. The furnishings and accessories don’t necessary match. It’s a chic and fun style. Mid-Century style is a great mix of minimalism, Hollywood regency and retro.
Open Floor Plan
Today every DIY home makeover show seeks to create an open floor plan. Today’s open floor plan is just another repeat of the Mid-Century designed home. The open floor plan streamlined the flow of a home, making it open and informal.
Furnishings
It was the era that began the hey-day of mass-produced furniture. Furniture has clean lines, no-fuss, functional comfort. Mid-Century style furnishings go well with the minimalist style – sleek, simple, bold. Famed furnishings include Eames chairs, tulip tables, marshmallow sofas, the egg chair, the womb chair & tripod lamps. See some great examples of those HERE. We have a brass and glass bar cart that belonged to my husband’s parents. I love it and it’s one of my few Mid-Century style pieces.
Style Textures
This style is a marriage of natural textures and man-made. Natural textures like wood, teak, marble, accented with brass and gold work for this style. Natural fiber fabrics cover sofas and accent pillows.
Accessories & Accents
The Mid-Century decorated home is hardly complete unless it has a gold starburst mirror, it’s one thing it has in common with the Hollywood Regency style. Colorful wallpaper with geometric, patterns and bold colors. Art prints of great works of art made it a more affordable option in the mid-century home. The accessories are sleek and without excess detail.
Color
More important than the colors of this style is how the colors are presented. Solid color blocks, unexpected color combinations that add to the boldness of this style. The rich color palette includes dark orange, teal, avocado, gold, plum, and deep red.
Here is a Houzz post that has some great info on this style. Is your home decor style mid-century? Are you in love with that era? Have you mixed some Mid-Century style into your home decor? Share your thoughts in the comments.
