The Many Styles of Military Style
This style is a little difficult to nail down. First you have to determine your goal. Are you creating a man cave, a children’s room, or a space to celebrate the history and sacrifice of those who have served? We have all of my father-in-law and grandfather-in-law’s military medals. We also have my husband’s grandfather’s dress blues. I plan to put all the medals in a shadow box. I’d love to find a way to honor and preserve the dress blue’s. Maybe writing this post will help me find some ideas.
History & Influences
I don’t know if there is really a “history” to decorating in the military style. It’s probably been around since the first military was formed, which was around 2700 BC according to Wikipedia. Like many other styles this style has many styles within it; the obvious different styles are Army, Navy, Marine Corp, Air Force, Coast Guard, etc. You could branch off even more and include decor influences like these: Industrial, Vintage & Steampunk.
Style Colors
Colors for a military styled room depend on what branch of the military you are memorializing. Obviously Army could be camouflage green or desert brown. Navy would be, well, navy blue, white and red.
Design Elements
Elements of the Military styled room include metal, studded leather, and canvas. Accessories for this style might include some of these elements:
Old typewriter

Antique radio

Green leather desk chairs
Vintage maps and globes

War Signs

Military equipment plans – tanks, planes and weapons
(I found a lot of vinyl wall art of these and other military related things)

Footlockers

Antique binoculars, helmets, lanterns
(or pictures of them, like this antique postcard)

Incorporating Into Your Current Decor
My search for military decor ideas primarily landed on boys rooms, man caves and home offices. There were a few home gyms and bedrooms as well. It was hard to find good examples and other posts about military style. I will probably update this post when I come across more.
One thing I did find a lot of were posts and blogs by military families on how to make small spaces and military housing a functional and comfortable home. It’s another reminder of how much our military families sacrifice for our freedom. Thank you to all who serve and all the family members who serve with them!
Blessings,

This is interesting. I think that the medals awarded and other memorabilia from service should be displayed. I would be nice if you could find the date and reason that your family members received medals and include that information in your display.
