Why a Powder Room Makeover?
Years ago I read a magazine article that suggested that your powder room makeover should be one of the first decorating projects you do in your home. Their reasoning was that your powder room is the one room your guests are very likely to visit. That makes sense to me. Although it was not the first room I redid, it was the second. The first was the dining room.
Another reason I wanted the powder room makeover to be one of my first projects in our house was because I knew I was not going to replace the fixtures. So it would be pretty inexpensive to complete the project. It did however take a lot of time and elbow grease!
If You Can’t Paint…Please Hire Someone Who Can!
Whoever painted the half bath previously had done a very messy job of it (like every other room they painted in this house). There were splatters of deep red paint on the wood floor, the fixtures, and the ceiling. The pipes to the sink and toilet even had red paint on them. It was a mess I could not wait to rectify. Worse than the spatters were the dribbles of paint. My husband and I spent two weekends patching, sanding, patching, sanding, cleaning.
Inspiration Pieces
I purchased these vases on clearance at Kohls. They are the inspiration for color palate. I love the simple lines and the blues and greens. I had several peacock feathers that I had used for some baby shower décor. I repurposed those and used them with the vases. I choose three of the shades of green out of the colors of the vases and silver for my color palatte.
I had been collecting frames to paint the three shades of green. I was going to have a silver wall with green frames from floor to ceiling. I nixed that in favor of a silvery accent wall with three green mirrors. I love how it turned out.
The other walls are the medium green from my color palette. Instead of painting the ceiling white, I choose charcoal. I really think it adds to the style of the room.
Accessories
When we moved into this house there was no mirror over the sink. I had this one for years. It did have a gold and white frame. I spray-painted it silver and added the green where it had been white.
If you have not tried the hammered paint effect you will want to after this. I painted the chrome light fixture, the plastic switch plate and this candlestand with it. Don’t they look 1,000 times better. Would you ever guess the switch plate was plastic?
Storage
With a pedestal sink, there is no storage in our powder room. I wanted something a bit different for storing extra bath tissue. I tried to find something that could double as a hiding place for the bath tissue and a step stool for little kids to use. I did not find that, but I did find an oversized candle holder on clearance at Target. I put it on a short oriental style plant stand (I’m thinking of painting it, too) to give it some height and added a little peacock to it.
The powder room is probably the smallest room in your house. Is it the most visited room, too? Have you made it guest-worthy? Are you looking for inspiration? I hope you found some in my post. If you did or if you need some inspiration help, please comment. I’d love to help you!

You’ve added so many great elements to your powder room It looks refreshed and new. I tackled this project last year and gave our powder room a makeover. It was a big job, but so worth all the effort. Yours looks terrific. Thanks for sharing on Snickerdoodle Sunday. Pinned and Tweeted.
Beverly,
Thanks so much for the compliments. I love your site. I wish I could get better pictures of my powder room. It’s so narrow that it’s hard to photograph. If you have any tips on that, I’d love the help.
Thanks again!
What a transformation! I love the color palette you chose too. Thank you for sharing at Merry Monday!
Thanks! It was easy to choose the color palette once I found my inspiration piece. Have a wonderful week!
