How Does Your Paint Roller Make You Feel?
Do you have a love/hate relationship with painting your home? When I tell people I LOVE painting they generally ask me if I need to have my head examined. There are two things that thrill me about the prospect of painting a room:
1. I LOVE the way a fresh coat of paint done properly can transform a room. It makes it feel clean and new. If you love that new car smell you know the feeling painting a room gives me.
2. Gadgets make me happy. Tools and gadgets are fun. The best ones help us be more efficient and help us get things done.
Do you dread painting or does the prospect make you giddy?
Gadget Giddiness
Since we are right in the middle of this series on redoing our entryway & stairwell, I thought I’d take a moment and share my latest secret weapon – the smartest paint roller EVER! IMHO
I’ve always been a bit old fashioned and frugal about my paint tools. Like everything else in life – I want quality for the lowest possible price. I’ve always used just a standard paint roller. Then I decided to go all out and get an upgrade. For Christmas 2014 I asked for and received the Wagner Smart Roller. Isn’t it pretty?
Pretty awesome! This baby saved me a LOT of time on the entry redo painting. One of the frustrations of painting this house is that the flat cheap paint on the walls just absorbs the first coat of paint. Having the Smart Paint Roller made it super easy to keep loading the roller without 10 million trips up and down the ladder to the paint tray.
Why this Paint Roller is Smart
- The plastic handle has an integrated paint reservoir, as already mentioned that saved a lot of time and I was able to get better coverage. One fill of the reservoir is should cover about 70 square feet.
- It’s motorized so with the press of a button the roller gets reloaded.
- It is comfortable to use. The design is ergonomic. My hands did not seem to get tired like they can when gripping something for a long period of time.
- The handle length made it easier to reach areas a normal paint roller cannot reach.
- You can use it with oil or latex paint.
- It is easy to fill and not too difficult to thoroughly clean. I am super picky about making sure all my tools are clean and stored correctly. It did take some time to get it really clean, but the next day when I used it, I was happy to see it was working perfectly. If I had tried to skimp on the cleaning, I don’t think I’d have had such great results.
- It does a great job of painting evenly without drips (I cannot stand dried paint drips! They make my OCD flare!)
Smart TIPS

- Make sure you have extra batteries on hand. It would be awful to have the juice run out before your paint job is complete.
- Keep a small paint tray and small roller handy for smaller areas that this roller might be too large to handle.
- After you clean it, make sure it dries thoroughly before putting it away.
- Be sure to lubricate the seals before storing.
- Read the directions. Thoroughly, completely read the directions. Did I say – READ THE DIRECTIONS? Make sure you understand them.
- Follow the usual proper paint prep process (say that 5 times fast!). Just because you have this awesome gadget it does not mean you can slack on properly preparing the surface you are painting. Do it right the first time! – said every mom everywhere.
- If you have any trouble with leaking or other problems, read the directions again. It is most likely a problem with the seals not sealing correctly. To resolve any leaking disassemble it, (which will require a thorough cleaning since you already have paint in it) and put it back together again making sure the seals are correctly in place.
I also received the Wagner Smart Edge Roller for Christmas the same year. I was not happy with my attempts to use that. I plan to watch some more Youtube videos and give it another try at some point, just to make sure I’m not missing something important.
If you decide to try the Smart Flow Paint Roller, I hope you find it improves your feelings toward painting. If you’ve already had good success with one, please share your wisdom in the comments. I love to hear from you!
Blessings,
Lauree
